Cruisin' With The Chick

People keep asking me if we still have our chickens. I keep correcting them that it is chicken. Singular. And, yes, we have not killed her. Yet.

But, I think she is protesting being our singular, pet chicken. She still won't lay eggs for us. It is very likely we are doing something wrong, but I'm convinced she is just being stubborn.

I can't see why she wouldn't adore us and want to supply us with all of our huevos. (I've been dealing with the Panamanian government this morning - but that's way off topic.)

Look how spoiled she is -

A day in the life of Fluff and Bear.

I'm Ready!

Bear has the uncanny ability to put everything on backwards. Her shoes are definitely always on the wrong feet. She will even put a skort on with the skirt side at the back.

Does she really think the skirt looks better from behind???

You would think she would get it right maybe fifty percent of the time.

No, it's wrong every time.

Now this was the final straw.

I think she does it just to tease me.

Fruit Man

I think it's great when the kids all start working together on something (usually something silly). I totally encourage it, even if it means my fruit will be drawn on and glued together. We're going to peel these fruits anyway.

What makes them think to start putting this stuff together?

How do you like the close up? I, for one, was a little concerned about it at first. Then, I realized they were calling it Fruit Man - and it was wearing a bow tie! Whew!

I never know what I am going to find on my counter when I walk in the room.

Molecule Explosion

Some crazy molecules have formed at my kitchen table this morning. The kids have been hard at work making new scientific discoveries. Some molecules even resemble robots!

We are going through Real Science 4 Kids Chemistry. I really like the way they use big, colorful pictures and easy explanations without dumbing it down. They had to make random molecules first. Then they had to remember that different atoms cannot form as many bonds as they want, so they had to count the bonds to make real molecules. All while playing with (and eating) marshmallows. How could that not be fun for kids?

When I asked Moses what he wanted me to teach him while he was living with us, he immediately answered - Chemistry! Really. That just happened to be my minor in college - thank you, God! How did He know a little boy from Africa would want me to teach him chemistry one day and I wouldn't be intimidated by it? Oh, that's right - He's God! He was probably laughing at the image of the marshmallow explosion on my table that I had waiting for me in my future while I was staying up late, struggling over Organic Chem. Now, all those classes were worth it.

Silent Bear.

Bear is my biggest talker. I know that statement shocks anyone who knows her - but it's true. She talks all the time. At home.

It's a whole 'nother story when we get around other people. She won't say a word. Many times, even good friends that we spend a lot of time with will stop everything because they just heard her voice for the first time. They freeze. And just listen.

This video is pretty long, but I am putting it out there as evidence. She does speak. She keeps us laughing constantly.

Can't Make Up My Mind.

I have been having to lay down with Bear at bedtime while she is adjusting to going to sleep without sucking her thumb. She apparently has to talk herself to sleep now. And I'll tell you - a conversation with a four year old is not what I need when I am going to sleep. She gets my mind going in all directions.

So - she's excited about Saturday and trying to figure this countdown thing out. Being the good homeschooling mom, I am taking full advantage of working on her days of the week while we talk and thinking to myself, "heh, this homeschooling thing is a breeze - they are thirsting for knowledge and you just have to take advantage of the teachable opportunities." (I know - BIG mistake!) Then, this is how our conversation ended:

Bear: "How many days is it till Saturday?"

Me: "Two."

Bear: "I thought it was three."

Me: "Yesterday it was three, and today is it two. Then, tomorrow it will be one more day."

Bear: Pause. "Why do you keep changing your mind?"

Me: Silent - but laughing hysterically inside!!!

Okay, so the conversation was not going where I thought! We'll keep working on it. I love the thoughts of a four year old. I have a lot of funny friends - but they are funny on purpose. And, as much as I love them, the innocent thoughts of little kids just crack me up!
